If there’s one feature, I would have loved apple to add to their product line is the ability to open a zip file without the need to install a 3rd party app. I have always been an Android gal and so had never had such issues with zip files. But ever since I switched to iPhone (and yes I love it!) it has become a constant problem every time I try to open a zip file.
And because many of the SVG designs I purchase or download from the internet comes in a zip form, it is an issue I have to constantly deal with.
So I had 3 options:
1-save my downloaded zip file to a computer, unzip and send back to my phone.
2-Save the file to my Dropbox and unzip from there (which adds to the hassle of uploading and re downloading process) or
3- Just download an app that does the job directly in my phone. And because switching between a phone and a computer or a laptop is a big hassle, I decided to look up an app that saves me that trouble.
So in this tutorial, I’m going to show you a step by step guide on what app I use and how I save and open any SVG file in design space app on my iPhone/iPad.
Now I’m not saying this is the best or the only method out there. I’m also in no way affiliated with the app I’m using or promoting the use of it. This is purely my way of opening SVG files on my iPhone or iPad.
So without further ado let’s get on with it!
How to open a zip file on an iPhone/ iPad without the need of Dropbox or a computer or laptop

Before we get started with the nitty gritty of this tutorial, you first need to download and install two apps on your iPhone or iPad:
Unzip tool app
Cricut design app
Both of which you can download from the App Store for free.
For this tutorial, I’m going to go ahead and download a free design from the freebies section, and as an example I’m going to use the animal heart design which you can grab for free from here.
Once your zip file has downloaded, you want to go ahead and choose open in. From the choices, click on copy to zip tool.
Once the zip tool app opens, click on the zip file you have just downloaded.
A ‘do you want to unzip?’ question pops up, which you want to go ahead and press ok.
Once the file is unzipped, go ahead and open the unzipped folder and choose the SVG file you want to work with.
In this example I’m going to choose tiger.svg.
On the right hand side of the file name, you’ll see a square with an upward facing arrow. You would want to click on that, which will open another pop up. From that pop up, go ahead and choose open in... and click on save to files.
Now all you have to do is add the svg file to your chosen folder. I usually save my files in the ‘pages’ folder as it is the easiest for me to locate.
You can now go ahead and close the zip tool app and open cricut design app.
From there choose new project, then upload (you can find the ‘upload’ option in the bottom bar of the app).
Then choose browse files. Now locate the folder you saved your svg file to. Once the file opens in cricut design, give the image a name then save it.
And that’s it!
All you have to do now is select the image and choose insert!
You can now edit, ungroup, cut and do all sorts of stuff you would normally do in the design app.
I hope you find this tutorial helpful. You can use this method to open any zip file on your iOS devices.
